Sanctuary
Overview:
Kelburn Campus Gateway Sacred Space. Creating a modern sanctuary for the Te Herenga Waka Victoria University of Wellington – Sanctuary – provides an architecture of mystique, atmosphere, and reflection. Developed as Kelburn’s modern gateway, the building is representative of a secular, multi-cultural, multi-religious campus, where spaces of community and theatre have been developed to cater to all on campus. The building is composed of two different buildings: Sanctuary Building and Sanctuary Tower. The Sanctuary Building represents a modernised version of Kelburn’s Landmark, the Hunter Building, and the Tower acts as the interior joinery between both Landmarks. This assignment was based on the fourth-year sacred spaces stream. Assignment for ARCI 411 Architectural design research. A copper and concrete materiality was developed through the process complementary of the Hunter Building, with a researched programme inclusive of ""contemplative"", ""sanctuary"", and ""theatrical"" spaces."
